View Full Version : Thoughts On The New "Operator Initiative"

Hey guys

I am sure most if not all of you have seen or heard about the operators banding together to look at finding and supporting a new resource. As much as anything, this is interesting simply because the operators are co-operating (sic). There's good and bad in that btw - but that's one for another day!

So I just wondered what you think this initiative *should* entail.

I noticed that the wording here was interesting:

the goal is to support an entity that is aligned with our interests and will help cultivate our community in a fair and impartial manner

Initially I thought perhaps they are thinking about setting up their own forum, but then of course there is the issue of who runs it. 65 cooks would probably spoil the broth :D So does it mean they will throw their support behind GPWA perhaps? And assuming CAP continue to run conferences and a forum are we in danger of just having an over-crowded space if a new one starts up?

I'm guessing whatever it is, "control" will be an over-riding factor in any decision, as much for the sake of keeping costs down as anything and it seems fairly apparent that in the current economic climate, this is more necessary than ever.

For me one of the key issues is having two seperate conference organisers. CAC will undoubtedly go forward, but we don't quite know where Alex's company sits at the moment - I expect he will clarify that at some point. Is there a CAP contract? Are the CAP conferences still on the agenda and if so will they be supported? Or maybe there are other options?

All speculation of course and we may not know more until after the meeting they are holding at CAC. But some affiliate input onto what the way forward should be might at least provide some feedback for the operators chipping into the decision making process who stop by here (of which there are a few).

Cheers,

Simmo!

Interesting is all I have to say at this point, just going to sit on the side and watch the show for now.

As far as Alex goes stay tuned for an announcement in the next few days a change is on the way....

Are we talking about Alex Pratt here?

IMO it just means that the industry is growing up and operators are forming an association to look after their own interest.

What that says to me is that affiliates need to do the same. We have so many splintered groups that are often infighting, it seriously puts us at a disadvantage.

I'm an operator, but I would suggest some type of unity between the forums / groups....Maybe a "multi forum certification" where if say 5 different forums / communities approve you, then you get "Rock and Roll recommendation" or something. Hopefully though, the forums today, don't try to keep new sites from popping up. But yes Dom, the time has come.

There is/was such an initiative between affiliate forums.
The GPWA formed one with Poker Affiliate Listings, Affiliate Guard Dog and GIA - may be others I haven't heard about. I don't know what's come of it, though.

This is a topic that should probably be revisited now.

IMO it needs to include ALL affiliates, not just those who are members of certain boards.

Otherwise it's not industry representation, it is a selective cartel.

I agree with you 100% Dom. We do need to form our own association, unsplintered, and it does need to include all affiliates.

Perhaps we need to send out invitations to a private online chat that only affiliates are invited to, and only open to invited participants. Similiar to what the programs are doing. Or something like this.

I've been taking the wait and see approach also. But it's not getting any better yet, and I feel we could find ourselves at a disadvantage like Dom said.

Why couldn't we have a forum that is run by affiliate volunteers? Maybe one volunteer from each of a variety of affiliate sites/forums, to work as moderators? A forum that's for the affiliates. A forum built to provide a single affiliate site used for communication and information amongst affiliates. A simple forum, not putting anyone into a position to profit financially, but for all affiliates to profit from the unity. I'd certainly be willing to volunteer my time to help out in a forum like this.

I'm sure there's a zillion problems and conflict that could result. Unless some simple rules were placed, adhered to, and enforced by the volunteer staff.

Sounds like a plan.

A real affiliate conference - affiliates only and any affiliates who would like to come.
